About Us
About us.
At Staffordshire Autism Service (SAS), our work is grounded in professionalism, respect, and a shared belief that autism assessments should be both evidence-based and person-centred. We combine clinical expertise with warmth and understanding, offering you the opportunity to gain clarity and confidence as you take meaningful next steps.
Our service is led by two experienced Clinical Psychologists, Dr Matt Johnson and Dr Andrew Adams, who bring complementary skills, shared values, and over 30 years of combined experience in NHS and private settings.
We believe that understanding and acceptance are the foundation for growth, wellbeing, and connection.
Dr Matt Johnson - Consultant Clinical Psychologist
Dr Matt Johnson is a HCPC-registered Consultant Clinical Psychologist (PYL15785) with extensive experience working across the NHS, charity, education and independent sectors.
His career reflects a sustained commitment to developing and delivering high-quality psychological services for children, young people and adults.
Background and Training:
Dr Johnson completed his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Birmingham in 2004. He is fully trained in recognised diagnostic frameworks and assessment tools for autism and has undertaken many assessments with children and adults.
Over his NHS career, Dr Johnson held a number of senior leadership posts alongside his clinical work with children, young people and adults including Clinical Director for Learning Disability Services, Clinical Director for Children and Young People’s Services and Head of Psychology. As Director of Clinical Services at Caudwell Children, he led the design and implementation of their national autism assessment and diagnostic service at Keele University.
Clinical Expertise:
Dr Johnson specialises in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and provides training and supervision in this approach to mental health professionals in the UK and internationally. His approach to autism assessment is grounded in the same ACT principles he demonstrates in his clinical practice with adults - compassion, curiosity, and respect for each person’s lived experience.
Approach to Assessment:
Dr Johnson views an autism assessment as an opportunity for understanding and clarity, rather than simply a diagnostic outcome. His practice combines clinical rigour with warmth and accessibility, ensuring that every assessment leads to greater insight and confidence for the individual.

Dr Andrew Adams – Principal Clinical Psychologist
Dr Andrew Adams is a HCPC-registered Clinical Psychologist (PYL32555) with extensive experience supporting autistic individuals across all stages of life.
His career spans NHS, private, and international settings, bringing warmth, professionalism, and depth of understanding to every assessment.
Background and Training:
Dr Adams completed his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology through Staffordshire and Keele Universities in 2015. His early studies in psychology and law shaped his analytical and ethical approach - qualities that continue to guide his practice.
He is fully trained in recognised diagnostic frameworks and tools for autism and related neurodevelopmental conditions, and has delivered many comprehensive assessments for both adults and children. His clinical background includes senior roles in CAMHS, perinatal mental health, trauma rehabilitation, and veterans’ mental health, giving him a broad understanding of how neurodevelopmental profiles interact with emotional wellbeing.
Clinical Expertise:
Alongside autism assessments, Dr Adams works with difficulties such as ADHD, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, and emotional regulation. His clinical approach draws from Schema Therapy, DBT, Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), and Polyvagal Theory, allowing him to understand each client’s needs in context.
Approach to Assessment:
Dr Adams believes that a meaningful autism assessment offers more than a diagnostic outcome - it should provide understanding, validation, and clear guidance for support. His approach is person-centred, trauma-informed, and neuro-affirmative, ensuring that every client feels respected and understood. He values collaboration and transparency throughout, helping individuals and families make sense of lifelong experiences.

Dr Johnson and Dr Adams are fully insured to practice as independent psychologists and have Enhanced DBS certificates.
